Arthur Carles Jenkins

Age 89, Elkton, Va.

Arthur Carles “A.C” Jenkins, Jr., 89, of Elkton, passed away January 23, 2024. Mr. Jenkins was born December 22, 1934, and was the son of the late Arthur Carles Jenkins Sr. and Lillie Frazier Jenkins.

He graduated from Weyers Cave High School at age 16 and a year later was a postgraduate from Shenandoah High School. He lettered in both basketball and baseball.

He retired from James Madison University after 17 years of service, and owned and operated J. L. Foltz Mens Shop for many years.

He was inducted into the Rockingham County Baseball Hall of Fame class in 2012. In the county league, he helped establish the Shenandoah Indians, Elkton Blue Sox and the Luray Colonials and managed or played for several teams.

He spent a lot of time watching grandkids and great-grandkids play sports by coaching them either on the field or from the stands. He was an avid Washington Nationals and Redskins fan always making sure he would be home to watch every game.

Besides his love for sports, he loved his dogs and coon hunting. He was a part of the Blue Ridge Coon Hunters Club and was inducted into their hall of fame in 2021. He spent endless hours at bench shows and hunting competitions.

Over the years he was independent and strong-willed living on his own until a few weeks ago. He frequented Elkton’s Grub and Gab Diner for breakfast and lunch everyday where he visited with friends.

He is survived by son, Bobby Jenkins and wife, Monica, of Elkton; daughter, Kim Smith and husband Tom, of Port Republic; siblings, Joyce McAlister of Richmond, Larry Jenkins and wife, Kathryn of Grottoes and Judy Shirey and husband, Richard, of Rockingham; grandchildren, Benjamin “Buck” Jenkins and wife, Tracie, Elizabeth Jenkins, Molly Smith and Jeremy Jenkins; great-grandchildren, Gauge Jenkins, Kiersten Jenkins, Kaidance Jenkins, Blake Jenkins, Kanin Snow, Nathan Eubanks and Kenzie Eubanks.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife of 60 years, JoAnn Comer Jenkins; daughter, Sonja Kay Jenkins; siblings, Janet Jenkins, Claude Frazier, Clarence Frazier, Lawrence Frazier, James Frazier, Osby Frazier, Jr. and Juanita Rodgers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton. 

The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the funeral home with Pastor Carter Dean and Pastor Jim Kite officiating.
