Luray No. 4 seed in Bull Run tourney, face undefeated Madison Tuesday

LURAY, Oct. 22 — The Luray Bulldogs’ volleyball team continues to trend upward at just the right time, having won four-in-a-row and eight of their last 11 matches heading into the postseason.

Luray capped off the regular season Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Clarke County. The Eagles handed the Bulldogs a 3-0 loss on the road back on Sept. 29, but Luray proved to be dominant on their home court.

Junior Zoe Vaughn lead Luray with nine kills and four aces against the Eagles. Classmate Lakin Vile followed with seven kills, an ace and a block, while fellow juniors Caroline Donovan and Emily Benson contributed a combined 11 kills, four aces and a block.

Senior Isabel Aliveto lead the Eagles with seven kills, four aces and a block.

The Bulldogs are communicating better as a team, making fewer mistakes, and setting up a lot of powerful spikes against their opponents. However, Luray (12-8) will have its hands full when they hit the road at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 to face undefeated Madison County (20-0) in the first round of the Bull Run District tournament. The Mountaineers have only lost six sets through 20 matches and were crowned the Bull Run District regular season champs on Thursday night.

Madison is one of the top-ranked teams in the state among VHSL Class 2 teams. The Mountaineers are the No. 1 seed in the Bull Run tourney, which kicks off Tuesday among four teams. The tournament will only consist of two rounds, the semifinals and finals. Luray is the No. 4 seed and must get through Madison to play in the district championship.

However…Luray is the only team this season to take the Mountaineers to a fifth and deciding set.

No. 3 Clarke County (11-9) will travel to Woodstock to play No. 2 Central (16-6) for the other district semifinal. The two district semifinal winners will play each other at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the highest seed for the district championship. The JV championship, pitting Madison (19-1) and Central-Woodstock (12-6), will start at 6 p.m.

Luray is currently ranked No. 3 in Region 1B. If things remain the same when the region tournament kicks off the first week of November, the Bulldogs would host No. 6 Rappahannock County (6-12) in the region quarterfinals on Monday, Nov. 2. With only six teams competing, the No 1 and No. 2 seeds — likely Buffalo Gap and Riverheads — will receive a bye in the first round.

Region semifinals are slated for Thursday, Nov. 5, with the Region 1B championship scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7.
