Citizens United paved the way for the proliferation of Super PACs and 501(c)(4) organizations that can accept unlimited contributions from corporations, billionaires, and other entities. This unregulated influx of money has created a political environment where the voices of ordinary citizens are drowned out by the megaphones of the ultra-wealthy. When figures like Musk and Trump, two of the wealthiest and most influential individuals in the world, can openly wield the threat of financial retaliation against political opponents, it reveals how far the balance of power has shifted from voters to oligarchic interests.
The threats posed by figures like Musk and Trump illustrate the chilling effect that unrestrained political spending can have on elected officials’ dissent. By promising to bankroll primary challengers, they send a clear message: Defy us, and we will use our wealth to destroy your political career. This not only discourages elected officials from standing up to powerful figures, but also discourages qualified individuals from running for office in the first place. The result is a political system that favors conformity, perpetuates polarization, and strengthens the oligarch’s role in policymaking.
Congress has the power to restore balance and fairness to the political system by passing legislation to counteract the effects of Citizens United. While a constitutional amendment may be the ultimate solution, immediate legislative steps can include greater transparency requirements for political donations, limits on contributions to Super PACs, and stronger enforcement mechanisms to prevent coordination between campaigns and independent expenditure groups. Such measures would not only curtail the influence of wealthy individuals like Musk, currently the wealthiest individual in the world, but also empower ordinary citizens by leveling the playing field.
Opponents of reform often argue that restricting political spending infringes on free speech. However, the First Amendment was designed to protect the free exchange of ideas, not to grant disproportionate influence to the highest bidder. A democratic system that prioritizes equity over monetary clout is more consistent with the spirit of the Constitution and the values upon which this nation was founded.

Miles. “The threats posed by figures like Musk and Trump illustrate the chilling effect that unrestrained political spending can have on elected officials’ dissent.” Really??? The DEMONcrats had way more money to campaign on against Trump, then just wasted it on Harris, Oprah, others. We don’t care if Elon, Vivek, and Don are billionaires. See I’m on a first name basis already. Hey! You forgot to mention, Adolph Hitler and George Soros. Trump won, and it’s because of s— like what you just wrote is why.
Miles, thank you for your thoughtful letter. You are 100% on point, and if the citizens united decision is not repealed our democracy is a thing of the past. When billionaires can buy elections in America we should all be afraid! Sherry Ford
Mr. Morimoto makes some good points – while campaign finance reform has been around since the 19th century, FECA was passed in 1971, and reinforced after Watergate. 2010 saw the the diminishment of these rules. As all things are cyclical, the pendulum will swing the other way on this as well.
Mr Sanford will disagree and denigrate this comment, because that’s what bullies do; Trump didn’t win because of opinions such as those expressed here. Trump won because of “peace and prosperity.” He won because the electorate believed the outgoing administration was responsible for the inflation experienced over the last four years, amongst other things. This isn’t unusual; the economy is cyclical as well, and there would have been inflation no matter who won the 2020 election.
Mr. Sanford, your opinions are well known as you utilize your First Amendment Rights liberally. But remember the Mark Twain quote “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”
I’m sorry but how come democrats weren’t complaining about billionaires donating to PACs when George Soros donated millions to Obama and millions more to other democratic candidates. And keep in mind, Elon Musk and Donald Trump were democrats in the past.
Democrats have always been in favor of campaign finance reform. Sadly, it costs an exorbitant amount of money to run for office as it currently stands in our country. Musk has taken it to a new level. Can you imagine how the GOP would react to a Democrat billionaire giving away a million dollars a day to a voter in a swing state to sway their vote? How can this be acceptable and normalized?
Evil never sleeps and comes at us in all forms and directions.
Both sides need a reckoning over the crazy amount of money that is considered free speech, be it Soros, Musk or anyone.
