Your most recent video for “Page Valley Livin’” did a great job highlighting the group of Page County volunteers called “Community Works” and its riverside clean-up at the Alma Boat Landing, this past Saturday. April 27.
The clean-up was a great success, with approximately 25 volunteers participating, and it included a river safety demonstration by the Shenandoah Riverkeeper and a display of equipment and materials the Friends of the Shenandoah River use in testing for harmful E Coli bacteria.
This letter focuses on one part of Community Works that deserves special mention.
So many of us — here in Page County and nationally — are weary of partisan politics that divide us and want to work together on the many local, nonpartisan needs across our community. Initiated by local Democrats, Community Works now brings together people across the political divide on many civic projects of common concern, partnering with (and providing volunteer resources to) a range of other local organizations and citizens, regardless of political differences. The wide range of volunteers at the Alma Boat Landing exemplified that; we all focused on the common goal of protecting the river for the good of the overall community.
Other Community Works projects likewise drew volunteers across the political spectrum — launching a food drive and art classes for kids at the West Luray Rec Center, supporting Page One’s home heating program, helping infirm and elderly County residents with home repair and maintenance, volunteering with the Virginia Cooperative Extension to advise high schoolers on the realities of personal finance, and more.
As its tagline puts it, Community Works best, together.
