37-year educator, coach, official cites ‘health concerns’ for leaving position he started on July 1

LURAY, August 2 ― On Friday, Page County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Antonio Fox, sent out a letter to faculty, staff, students and families announcing that Frankie Comer will be stepping down immediately as the Athletic Director of Page County High School — a position he began on July 1.

“PCPS is announcing the immediate retirement of the Page County High School (PCHS) Athletic Director,” the letter reads. “Mr. Frankie Comer has decided that he needs to step down from his role as the Athletic Director due to health concerns.”

Comer began his 37-year career in education at Page County High School, where he has served as a Health and Physical Education teacher, a Driver Education instructor, and an alternative education teacher. He has also served as an assistant principal across the division, the varsity and junior varsity football coach at PCHS, and the head coach and assistant track coach for the Panthers. Additionally, for the past 14 years, he has worked as an athletic official for the Virginia High School League.

He holds a masters degree in Education from Shenandoah University, a Bachelor of Science degree from Elon University, an Associate’s Degree from Chowan College, and an administrative endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education.

Comer replaced Bill Simmons, who served PCHS as Athletic Director for the past three years.

The open position of Athletic Director is posted on the division’s website. Division and school staff will be working as quickly as possible to fill this position, as well as providing ongoing support to ensure a seamless transition for students, families and the school.

“PCPS and PCHS thanks Mr. Comer for his many years of dedicated service to the division and we extend our best wishes to him,” reads the Aug. 2 letter from Dr. Fox.

“With the retirement of Mr. Frankie Comer, PCHS Athletic Director, Mr. David Cale, Principal, will serve as the point of contact for the Athletic Department until further notice. All athletic programs will continue as normal with PCHS staff and the division supporting coaches, students and families through this transition,” reads a follow-up notice from Dr. Fox, also sent on Aug. 2.
