Community Works 4Page and Friends of the Shenandoah River planning two clean-ups

Community Works

Dear Editor:

Following up on a highly successful river clean-up last April, Community Works 4Page is planning two clean-ups in April in partnership with The Friends of the Shenandoah River. Our first clean up is on April 5, 2025, from 9-11:30am at the Alma Boat Landing. Similar to last year’s event, this year’s clean-up will feature a demonstration of water quality testing led by the Laboratory and Program Director of the Friends of the Shenandoah River. The demo will showcase the equipment and materials used to test for harmful E. coli bacteria.

Last spring’s clean-up was a great success, with approximately 25 volunteers from Community Works and Friends of the Shenandoah River participating, and more than a truck load full of trash—everything from tires and plastics to fishing line and even a toaster– collected and delivered to the Landfill.  The Page Valley News video series “Page Valley Livin’  highlighted Community Works and last year’s river clean-up; view it here: https://pagevalleynews.com/page-valley-livin-learns-about-community-works-and-upcoming-river-clean-up/

This year we will have another opportunity for residents to help us clean up at the Shenandoah Landing and River Park on April 8th from 2-4pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be available for all those that volunteer with us. These clean ups are part of a larger effort from our partners with the Potomac Riverkeeper Network’s  Trash Free Shenandoah campaign. Community Works 4Page has grown since last spring to a team of nearly 100 volunteers, partnering with local civic, church, and nonprofit organizations to strengthen our community and restore trust among  neighbors, regardless of political differences. Initiated by the Rural Urban Bridge Initiative and local Democrats, Community Works volunteers now span the political spectrum — including Republicans, Independents, and people disengaged from politics — to tackle local needs and bring people together.
