February 21, 1991 — Columbia Gas Trans- mission Corporation is planning construction of a $10.1 million compressor station in southern Page County.
According to Kelly Merritt, a communications representative for Columbia Gas, the facility will be located on a 40- acre tract of woods and pasture land on Va. 685 southwest of Newport. Construction is scheduled for July, he said.
“The compression station will push greater volumes of natural gas through an existing 24-inch diameter underground pipeline in southwestern Page County,” Merritt said recently. “The pipeline transports natural gas from producing fields in Appalachia and the southwest to markets in Virginia and other eastern states.”
Demand for natural gas is increasing as consumers seek to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported oil while protecting the environment.
