November 9, 1989 — Contrary to reports that Adolph Coors Co. planned to shut down its plant in Elkton, the company decided Saturday on a $5.5 million expansion, company officials said.
The news comes on the heels of a memorandum, distributed Thursday of the plant’s 300 employees, that listed four options for the future of the plant. Closing the plant was one option. The memorandum sparked a story distributed by The Associated Press that outlined the possibility of the plant being closed.
“We are not shutting down,” said Janet Wendelken, manager of pubic relations for the plant.
On Thursday, Coors tried to give its employees some insight on the company’s option and priorities as far as the Stroh negotiations were concerned, Ms. Wendelken said.
Speculation about the future of the Elkton plant began last month after Coors announced plans to buy Stroh Brewing Co., the country’s third- largest brewery. The deal would give Coors an additional five breweries. Negotiations are continuing.
