Douglas McArthur, Jesse James and Bernard injured in one-car collision on 340

October 18, 1962 — Three were injured in a one-car collision on U.S. 340 in Stanley at 2:25 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8, when a 1953 Ford operated by Douglas McArthur Cubbage of Stanley ran off the road, down an embankment and struck a tree. Cubbage suffered a concussion and shock.

A passenger, Jessie James Stroupe, suffered a fractured left arm and lacerations on his face and head. Bernard Cubbage of Stanley, also a passenger, suffered a dislocated right collarbone.
