Age 94, Luray, Va.
Comfortably and peacefully, Eleanor Marston Gochenour met her Savior face-to-face on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester.
She was born on September 30, 1928, in Luray to the late Edward and Olga Marston.
On October 6, 1945, she married her sweetheart, Leo Henry Gochenour, who preceded her in death on July 23, 1956. She then raised five children, ages 10 and younger, as a single mom.
Surviving are two sons, Eldon Gochenour of Maynardville, Tenn., and Bubba Gochenour of Luray; two daughters, Theda Jenkins (Freddie) of Luray, and Gloria Stokes (Randy) of Harrisonburg; one grandson, Jason Gochenour of Harrisonburg; two granddaughters, Maranda Judd (Tyler) of Denver, N.C., and Kelly Jenkins (Jim) of Luray; and two great-grandchildren, McClain and Landry Judd of Denver, N.C. One son, Larry Gochenour, preceded her in death.
Eleanor was one of 12 children. She is survived by a sister, Cleo Weatherman of Rileyville; and a brother, Kenneth Marston of Luray. She was preceded in death by nine siblings, Hilda Burner, Evelyn Woodward, Junior Marston, Elaine Moyer, Belle Griffith, Muriel Williams, Nancy Cave, Doug Marston and Donnie Marston.
She was a skilled seamstress, making and mending many of the family’s clothes. You could often find her reading on the front porch swing.
Eleanor was such a caring person and family was important to her. Though she couldn’t drive, she accompanied many to doctor’s appointments and other engagements.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the Luray Christian Church.
A service to celebrate Eleanor’s life will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at the church by Pastor Jim Harrison. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Luray.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Luray Volunteer Fire Department, 1 Firehouse Lane, Luray, Va. 22835.
