Harry Edward Veney, age 71, of Luray, VA died Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Winchester Medical Center.
Survived by his wife of 50-plus years Marie (Frye) Veney of Luray, Va, Daughter-Candace Veney-Chaplin (Christopher) of Richmond, Va, Son-Harry Edward Veney (Olympia) of Front Royal, Va, Daughter-Jessica Veney of Richmond, Va, Sister-Joyce Ann (Veney) Johnson of Luray, Va, Brother-Aubrey “Nubby” Eugene Veney of Luray, Va, BrotherLeno Russell Veney of Newport News, Va, 5 grandchildren, Brooke, Ariel, Jacob, Sheridan and Jayden and a host of brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by Mother-Harriett Ann (Tutt) Veney, Father-Samuel Russell Veney, Sister-Norma Jean Cooper, Brother-Glenwood “Knuckles” Veney, Sister-Phyllis Roberta Cooper and Sister-Ruby Estelle Cooper.
Harry “Sammy” Veney was a lifelong Kansas City fan and was ecstatic to see his Chiefs recent Super Bowl win.
A veteran of the United States Army who served two tours of duty in Vietnam, he was a keen amateur historian and proud American.
Harry worked his entire life as a heavy equipment operator for various contractors in the Northern Virginia area; he chose early retirement due to health concerns.
Known for his quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor, he was always ready with a creative nickname or an anecdote to see the funny side of situations. Everyone who knew him had a story to tell about the nicknames he created and the stories he told that made everyone take life a little less seriously.
Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) and mandated restrictions, services for Harry E. “Sammy” Veney Sr., 71, of Luray, will be limited as follows:
The funeral home will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for public and friends to view and pay their respects, the family will be in attendance for a short interval in the evening.
A funeral service with limited seating will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 21 at the funeral home. Internment at the Veney Family Cemetery is open to the public.
