If you’d like a different way to work with your neighbors… give Community Works a try

Letter

What do most of us who live in Page County have in common? A desire to build a community that is a good place to live, raise a family and prosper.

I am committed to this goal, but I find that relying only on the traditional political process doesn’t get us there. All too often politics has become a war between neighbors, fought with animosity and characterizations that do not reflect the good neighbor intentions that most of us have. Rather than helping us focus on what we want for our community — good jobs, good schools, a safe and healthy environment — politics often focuses on what divides us, not what unites us. Encouraging us to work against each other, rather than together.

So when I heard about Community Works of Page County — an organization for people of good will (regardless of political perspective) to join together as volunteers to improve our community — I jumped at the chance to join. I have not been disappointed.

Spearheaded last year by a small group of local Democrats tired of political bickering and hoping to bridge the divide, Community Works has grown to over 65 local volunteers who differ in political beliefs but unite to address local needs. Along with so many others volunteering with Community Works, I have helped distribute food to neighbors in need, renovate a home damaged by fire so a grandmother could raise her grandchildren in a house rather than a garage, raise funds to improve our river’s health, helped high schoolers understand how to manage money, and handed out free backpacks at a back-to-school bash. I am finding through Community Works that there is no end to the opportunities to join your neighbors to make Page County a better place to live and raise families.

So, if you’d like to try a different way to work with your neighbors to help build up our community, give Community Works a try. We will welcome you with open arms. In September, we will be supporting the efforts of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Performing Arts of Luray’s Annual Gala, the Community Gardens, and the Remote Area Medical Clinic.

  1. This letter is encouraging. Great to see so many people— all across the political sprectrum— jumping in to address local community needs.
