In deep water

Shenandoah river

August 13, 1887 — The Elder John K. Booton, of Luray, father of Dr. T.L. Booton, of Washington, Va., an Old School Baptist minister, while returning home from Fauquier, made an attempt to cross a stream called Battle Run. His buggy turned over in the stream.

Fortunately for him, however, by swimming he reached the opposite shore in safety. Both his horse and buggy washed down the stream.

He walked down the stream and succeeded in cutting the harness off and saving his horse.

His satchel, containing his Bible, opened, and it became submerged in the stream. Up to present day it has not been recovered.
