LYNCHBURG, Feb. 28-29 — Luray High School junior Davey Johnson finished in second place by a fraction of a second in the boys 1000 meter run at the state indoor track meet for a second-straight year. Johnson’s repeat state runner-up performance lead a team of Bulldogs that produced three all-state honorees at the VHSL combined Class 1/2 state indoor track championships held at Liberty University.
Johnson won the Region 2B title in the 1000 meters on Feb. 10 and just missed a state title last week. His time of 2:35.2 was about seven-tenths of a second behind the state champion from Floyd County — but it broke the LHS school record that Johnson set at last year’s state indoor track meet of 2:37.5. The junior earned all-state status in the same event last season after finishing as the state runner-up in March 2023.
Last week, Johnson earned another all-state medal as a member of the Region 2B champion boys 4×400 relay team from LHS, who finished in fifth place at the state indoor meet with a time of 3:37.47. The relay team includes fellow region champions and all-state honorees Hunter Kibler, Drayvin Stevens and Eli Jones.
Luray junior Annah Whitmer finished in fifth place in the girls 500 meter dash with a time of 1:23.55 and earned all-state honors as well. Whitmer finished as the Region 2B runner-up on Feb. 10.
Other LHS competitors at the state indoor track meet at Liberty last week included the boys 4×200 meter relay team (9th place), senior Eli Jones in the boys 1000 meter run (11th), freshman Maya Jenkins in the girls 3200 meter run (12th place), and senior Hunter Kibler in the boys 300 meter dash (13th).
