NEW YORK, N.Y., March 9 — On Saturday, Luray High School’s Davey Johnson competed in the Nike Indoor National Championship 800-meter race at New York City’s Nike Armory track complex. Johnson finished 27th in the Championship Division with a time of 1:59.12.
Competing against runners from across the country, the LHS junior was one of only three Virginia athletes to run in the Championship 800m. The Nike National Championship rivals the New Balance National Meet, simultaneously held in Boston, as the two most prestigious high school championship events in the U.S.
Johnson qualified for the New York City race by posting a Luray High School record time of 2:31.87 in the 1000 meters back in December at Liberty University. Because the Virginia High School League and several other states do not run the 800m, Johnson was able to post a 1000m qualifying time that earned acceptance into this prestigious track meet.
