LURAY, Nov. 1 — After a slow start and battling some health issues earlier in the fall, Luray’s Davey Johnson is finishing the cross country season strong. After capturing his second-straight Bull Run District title last week, Johnson crossed the finish line first for his second-consecutive year at the Region 2B cross country championships on Wednesday. In addition, the junior set a new course record at Luray’s Chrisman Field, breaking the previous school and course record he set as a sophomore during last year’s Bull Run District championships.

On Wednesday, Johnson completed the 5K course at LHS in 16:18 — a new record for LHS cross country and the course at Chrisman Field. In late October last year, he made the same trek in 16:30.49, breaking the former LHS record of 17:04 and the former course best time of 16:34.

Page County’s Aaron Hensley finished sixth (17:11) at the Region 2B championships on Wednesday, while Luray’s Wyatt Seal came in seventh (17:10). Among the 55 runners in the race, Page County’s Asher Kite came in 18th (18:21) and Sean Cave was 21st (18:42).

Clarke County won the boys region team title, while Page County came in fourth as a team. The top three teams qualified for the state meet on Veteran’s Day, along with the top five individuals.

In the girls 5K, Page County’s Summer Kite finished 12th among the 56 competitors in the Region 2B meet, while Page’s August Beatty came in 23rd (22:51).

Abby Lane of Ft. Defiance won the girls race in 18:34, and Clarke County took the team title.

Johnson advances to the VHSL Class 2 Cross Country State Championships at Green Hill Park in Salem on Saturday, Nov. 11. For Class 2, the girls race begins at 11:45 and the boys kick off at 12:30 p.m.

There will be no onsite ticket sales at Green Hill Park. Tickets — $10 each — are ONLY available online at GOFAN:  https://gofan.co/app/school/VHSL
