SALEM, Nov. 12 — Luray High School sophomore Davey Johnson capped off a great season with a great finish on Saturday as the state runner-up at the VHSL Class 2 cross country championships at Green Hill Park in Salem.
Johnson finished a fraction over five seconds behind the state champion, Mason Erchull, a sophomore from Floyd County; while coming in about two-tenths of a second before third-place finisher, Patrick Nelson, a senior from Poquoson. According to MileStat.com, The three runners finished with times of:
- 16:33.84 — 1st place, Erchull
- 16:38.95 — 2nd place, Johnson
- 16:39.18 — 3rd place, Nelson
Johnson captured the Bull Run District and Region B cross country titles as a sophomore before heading off to the state championships on Saturday. He also set school and course records this season.
Four other regional runners finished inside the top 20:
- 4th — Callaway Beckett, junior, Clarke (16:47.25)
- 6th — Aidan Griffin, junior, Madison (17:07.84)
- 13th — Evan Roberts, freshman, Madison (17:44.53)
- 16th — Conan O’Neil, senior, East Rockingham (17:47.05)
Other local runners competing at the state cross country meet on Saturday among 101 entries were Page County senior Logan Heiston (35th — 18:28.71), Luray junior Eli Jones (49th — 18:48.94), and Page County freshman Aaron Hensley (96th — 22:10.20).
Central of Wise took the team title. Other regional teams performing well at the state meet, include Madison (6th), Clarke (7th) and East Rockingham (9th).
In the girls Class 2 cross county championships, Luray freshman Carolina Wood finished 19th (21:37.47), while Page County junior Summer Kite came in 22nd (21:55.07). The girls meet was won by Allegheny freshman Kiera Lowman with a time of 18:59.94. Four other regional runners finished in the Top 10:
- 3rd — Teya Starley, sophomore, Clarke (20:22.73)
- 5th — Claire Keefe, junior, Strasburg (20:31.82)
- 6th — Asia Hoover, junior, Central (20:38.35)
- 7th — Paige Hiserman, junior, Starsburg (20:50.06)
Allegheny took top team honors, followed by Clarke County in second. Central of Woodstock and Strasburg finished eighth and ninth as a team, respectively.
A total of 94 runners competed in the girls state cross country championship.
