GREENSBORO, N.C., June 15 — Luray High School rising senior Davey Johnson took 6th place in the National Elite division at the Adidas National meet in Greensboro, N.C. In the course of medaling in the prestigious meet among elite competition, Johnson also took another LHS record from his father, Paul Johnson, running 4:21.27 in the 1600 meters. Dr. Johnson, now an assistant superintendent for Page County Public Schools, set the previous record in 1984.
Two weeks earlier at James Madison University, Johnson collected his second state title by taking first in the boys 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.82 — almost three full seconds ahead of the state runner-up — at the VHSL Class 2 state track and field championships on June 1.
Almost exactly one year prior, also at JMU, the then-sophomore earned his first state title in the 1600-meter run (4:28.68). For the last two years, Johnson’s two state titles represent the only state championships — team or individual — earned by any athletes in the county.
