LHS wins another region sweepstakes in forensics

Seven Bulldogs headed to state forensics meet March 29 in Salem

LURAY, March 1 — On Saturday, the Luray High School forensics team took home another region title, as they won the overall team sweepstakes among nine schools at the A/B Super Region Forensics Tournament held at LHS. The Bulldogs have won the region title six of the last seven years, and seven team members will now advance to the VHSL state finals March 29 at Salem High School.

“Mr. Hammer and I start working with these students at the beginning of the school year and they participate in a variety of tournaments to prepare them for the VHSL season so that they’ve had that chance to work out kinks, build up their confidence and solidify their memory for their pieces and the speeches. It’s been a process throughout the year for them,” LHS forensics coach and six-time region Coach of the Year Gwen Burley said following Saturday’s tournament.

Burley revived the LHS forensics program during the 2017-18 school year and has produced a string of region champions, and even a few state champions over the past eight years.

Starting in October, LHS students competed in about a dozen categories among seven tournaments throughout the school year. The top three finishers at Saturday’s Super Region tournament, advanced to the state tournament later this month in Salem. Luray produced five individual region champions.

Among Luray High School’s state qualifiers are:

  • 1st place Extemporaneous Speaking – Senior Trevor Haugen
  • 1st place Original Oratory Speaking – Senior Lillian Jenkins
  • 1st place Storytelling – Senior Evie King
  • 1st place Humorous Interpretation – Junior Kaitlynn Scott
  • 1st place Prose Interpretation- Junior Brigid Dudley
  • 2nd place Impromptu Speaking – Freshman Madeline Mattics
  • 3rd place Prose Interpretation- Junior Mia Meyer

Sophomore Natasha Peers and Sophomore Koralynn Whiteside finished in 4th place for Humorous Duo Interpretation at the Super Region tournament — just one spot from qualifying for state.

Madison County was the A/B Super Region runner-up.
