October 8, 1990 — A well-known Luray chili cook recently escalated to the world class level. Hilda Wimpfen will compete at the 24th annual international chili cookoff in Terlingua, Texas, Nov.3.
“She’s the first chili cook in Luray to become a world class cook,” said Mrs. Wimpfen’s husband, Sheldon. “I’m real proud of her.”
To compete at such a level, a cook must accumulate nine points in area and state competitions sanctioned by the Chili Appreciation Society International. At the Luray “Chili When It’s Chilly” last April, Mrs. Wimpfen placed third and received two points. The chili wizardess also accumulated points at the Page County Heritage Festival event last year and in cookoffs sponsored by the “Oakton Pod,” the “Casanova Pod Picnic” and the “Odd Pod” giving her a total accumulation of six points.
At the recent Mason-Dixon Pod competition, which is the Maryland State Chili Championship, Mrs. Wimpfen accumulated three points when she came in second. Winning in Maryland enabled her to compete at Terlingua where about 90 cooks participated last year.
