On Tuesday, March 5, the Luray Volunteer Fire Department approved the purchase of new SCBA air packs to update their arsenal of firefighting equipment. SCBA – air packs are what firefighters wear inside of burning buildings, on HAZMAT incidents, car fires, and other calls to breath.
The current SCBA owned by the department was purchased in 2007 after receiving an Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Department of Homeland Security. Those packs will reach the end of their life cycle at the end of 2024. Luray Fire Department has applied for several years for a new AFG grant; however, due to the competitive process, they were not awarded a new grant.
Three quotes were received from different manufacturers in the mid-Atlantic region. Scott Airpacks was chosen by the department for their compatibility with mutual aide agencies nearby, as well as their warranty, and pack tracker capabilities. Pack tracker is technology that allows firefighters to quickly locate a downed firefighter within a structure.
The contract was awarded to Municipal Emergency Services for a total of $337,640. Estimated lead time is at least 12 weeks. The department will finance the purchase for a term of at least seven years.
Over the next several months, the department will be holding several fundraising events to help raise funds for the air pack purchase. No donation is too small, and all are appreciated.
If you would like to make a donation toward the air packs specifically, tax deductible donations may be sent to: Luray Fire Department 1 Firehouse Lane, Luray, Va. 22835 and specify Air Packs in the check memo.
