LURAY — The Luray Rotary Club announced this week that it will be canceling its 45th annual golf tournament scheduled for Aug. 19.

The annual event is a key fundraiser for the local civic club, but under guidance from Rotary International the group decided to use an abundance of caution in cancelling the golf tournament.

A recent letter from the Luray Rotary Club reads:

“After much discussion, and great reluctance, the Luray Rotary Club Golf Committee has decided to cancel this year’s Golf Tournament. COVID-19 information has evolved since our initial decision to proceed with a delayed tournament in August. Rotarians have been ‘put on notice’ by the General Counsel of Rotary International and the District Governor related to Rotary sponsored events. The notice outlined potential liability and public perception issues associated with events sponsored by the Club not completely following mandated pandemic restrictions. This information, along with our recent monitoring of similar events, and seeing firsthand the challenges involved in meeting social distancing and masking requirements, lead the Committee to the general belief we would not be able to follow or enforce all requirements for such events under the Governor’s mandate.”

The Luray Rotary Club hosts the four-man team, captain’s choice golf tournament to raise funds for local charitable organizations it supports, including Choices, Page One, Page Free Clinic, ShenPaco and educational scholarships. Over the years, the annual event has raised more than $670,000.

The Luray civic organization plans to offer sponsors and participants the option of a full refund or allowing Rotary to keep the funds as a donation, so they can move forward with contributions to local organizations. Those supporters will be recognized in a published advertisement.

The Luray Rotary Club has been in existence for more than 90 years and provides business networking  and fellowship opportunities for members at its Monday evening meetings at the Mimslyn Inn starting at 5:15 pm with cocktails followed by dinner at 5:45 pm.

In addition, the Rotary Club supports area organizations and community projects both financially and through volunteer efforts.
