Three local golfers earn All-District honors

HARRISONBURG, Sept. 23 — Three local golfers finished among the Top 5 and the Luray Bulldogs took the championship at Monday’s Bull Run District Golf Tournament held at Heritage Oaks in Harrisonburg.
“This was a day of reckoning for this team,” LHS golf coach Gwen Burley stated on social media following the big win. “These kids have truly dedicated themselves to practice and individual improvement during the off season, and on their own time. This hard work has truly paid off in a big way.”
Luray’s Will Judy shot an 80 on the day, giving him second place as district runner-up and a spot on the All-District golf team. Page County’s Logan Foster shot an 81 to take third place, while Luray’s Blake Turner tied for fifth with an 83. Both earned All-District honors. Strasburg’s Ella Mochoruk won the district’s individual title with a low of 78.
Among 48 competitors in the field, Luray was able to card three of its six scoring golfers among the top 13. The team score of 340 was four strokes below second-place Stonewall Jackson, and six strokes below third-place Clarke. Page County finished sixth among eight teams with a score of 375. While finishing third, the Eagles of Clarke County were the only team in the field to card all six golfers below 100.
For the Bulldogs, capturing the district championship means a step up for the program.
“These kids have been clawing at this for a while,” Coach Burley stated. “It has never been a doubt in my mind, but more about a matter of when would the Bulldogs take the ‘ship’ and claim their rights as a legit golf team in the eyes of our district and region.”
“So Proud of the Luray Bulldogs’ golfers,” Burley continued. “Now they are carrying around the knowledge that they can do this, and do this at a competitive level.”
Luray returns to the links at Heritage Oaks next Monday, Sept. 30 for the Region 2B Golf Tournament.
