LURAY, March 18 — In the midst of roundball success this season all across the county, here comes another story of excellence…another story of a small team playing big…this time from the middle school girls basketball team from Mount Carmel Christian Academy.
“The season was a true testament that it takes a team to win,” head coach Page Comer said. “From subs to starters, it took everyone to win.”
The youthful Warriors were often outsized, as MCCA draws players from fifth through eighth grade. However, Mount Carmel went a perfect 11-0 this season and captured both the regular season and region tournament championship among seven private schools in the area.
“Some games … starters got in foul trouble and subs had to step in, and they did…and did a good job,” Coach Comer said. “So from everyone…it took a team effort, and they did a very good job.”
The nine-player roster was lead by eighth graders Carlee Campbell and Haelyn Morris. During the region tournament, Campbell scored 18 points in the quarterfinal, posted six points and 17 rebounds in the semifinal, and nine points with eight rebounds in the region championship. Morris lead the team in scoring with more than 150 points this season.
On Saturday, Feb. 10, Mount Carmel defeated Blue Ridge Christian School of Bridgewater, 28-20, in the region tournament championship, which was played at Grace Christian in Staunton. The Warriors were crowned the North Region champs in Coach Comer’s second season at the helm.
“We had a smaller team,” Comer acknowledged, “but they showed a lot of heart.”
