STANLEY, March 17 — The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department responded to three vehicle accidents in four days last week with injuries reported in all four, including one fatality.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Stanley Fire Department and Page County EMS responded to a two-vehicle accident on East Main Street near the entrance to Ed Good Park at 3:37 p.m., according to Fire Chief Terry A. Pettit. When firefighters arrived, they “found a vehicle on its side with a female occupant trapped,” he stated. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to cut the female out, and she was transported to Page Memorial Hospital, according to the fire chief. East Main Street was blocked for about 30 minutes.

Thelma Almond, of Stanley, was charged with reckless driving after she was distracted and ran her 2002 Honda Civic into a parked vehicle that was unoccupied at the time, according to Stanley Police Officer Chris Stoneberger.

“Upon investigation, it appears inattention of the driver was the cause,” Officer Stoneberger stated. “The driver looked over to get a bottle of water and took their eyes off the road.”

The Stanley officer said that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the accident, nor was speed. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

On Friday afternoon, the Stanley Fire Department and Page EMS responded to a single-vehicle accident on River Road in which a pickup ran off the road. A female and a child injured in the crash were transported to Harrisonburg, according to Chief Pettit. River Road was blocked for about an hour.

Virginia State Police is investigating the single-vehicle crash that occurred at 4:07 p.m. Friday about a mile south of Honeyville Road. A 2006 Toyota Tacoma was traveling north on River Road when it ran off the left side of the roadway and collided with several trees.

The driver of the Toyota, Donna M. Wright, 65, of Shenandoah, Va., suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center, according to VSP Sgt. Brent Coffey. Wright was wearing a seatbelt.

A passenger in the Toyota, a 6-year-old male, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Sentara RMH Medical Center for treatment, according to the state police report. He was wearing a seatbelt, but not in a proper child restraint device.

Wright was charged with reckless driving; failure to maintain proper control, and failure to have the child in a proper restraint device.

The River Road crash remains under investigation.

Then on Saturday morning, the Stanley Fire Department and Page County EMS were called out to a motorcycle accident on Kite Hollow Road. No other vehicles were involved. The accident proved fatal and remains under investigation by state police.

A Husqvarna TE610 dirt bike was traveling south on Kite Hollow Road near Balkamore Hill Road when it ran off the right side of the roadway on Saturday morning. The rider was thrown from the dirt bike and collided with a large rock, according to a report from state police. The rider and dirt bike were not discovered until Saturday (March 16), by a passerby, who notified state police. At this stage of the investigation, it appears the crash occurred sometime between 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 15, and 7 a.m. Saturday, March 16, according to Sgt. Coffey.

The dirt bike rider, Douglas A. Burker, 29, of Stanley, Va., died at the scene of the crash as a result of his injuries. Burker was not wearing a helmet. Speed is considered a factor in the crash.
