LURAY, Nov. 7 — Luray High School senior Jaidyn McClung had a week to remember. Not only did the senior volleyball standout earn “Player of the Year” honors a second-straight time in the Bull Run District, but she also recorded her 1,000th career kill in the first round of Region B action and helped the Bulldogs punch a ticket to the state tournament.
At the close of the regular season on Senior Night against Rappahannock, McClung recorded her 1,000th career dig. While the moment marked a special milestone, the Bulldogs’ early exit from the Bull Run tournament in the semifinals meant that Luray was just one game away from potentially ending its season — one they had hoped would include a trip to the state tournament.
However, in the true spirit of “survive and advance”, Luray posted two amazing underdog victories as the sixth-seeded Bulldogs defeated No. 3 Buckingham (3-1) and No. 2 Clarke (3-2) to earn a spot in the Region B championship at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at East Rockingham High School. The Eagles (22-6) defeated Luray in three tough sets in the district semifinal.
McClung posted 17 kills in each of the two region tournament games last week. By making it to the Region B title game, Luray (16-8) automatically qualifies for the VHSL Class 2 state volleyball tournament.
