Not always fun to ferry

Shenandoah river

February 23, 1961 — If there are those who think there is a lot of fun and sport ferrying school children across the Shenandoah River in all types of weather and at all times of the day, they would do well to talk to J. Robert Yates who operates the school bus from Compton.

“I like fun and I like sport,” he says, “but this goes further — this is an adventure and sometimes a dangerous one, which I do not welcome with children in the boat.”

Yates has transported as many as nine children in his 15 foot flat-bottom boat at times, and “I can tell you I have had some thrilling moments from high water, ice and floating debris during the 20 years I have ferried across the Shenandoah.”
