LURAY — If you dare to take the “polar bear plunge” this February, there’s still time to register for the annual fundraising event set in the beautiful Page Valley.
The Page Alliance for Community Action is busy making final preparations for its fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Lake Arrowhead. Registration and activities start at 11 a.m.
The family-friendly event includes a costume contest and prizes for “snowflakes from the glacier.” Contestants must brave the cool mountain waters of Lake Arrowhead and race out to a “glacier” that contains “snowflakes” that can be exchanged for prizes back on the beach.
Race registration is open to adults and children ages 11 and up. The cost is $35 for both in person and virtual participation, while team registration offers a discount of $5 per person. Virtual participants are not eligible for prizes.
Teams may be all men, all women or mixed. Each team must have a team captain, team name, and at least five members. Each participate will be asked to sign a liability waiver at registration.
Participants who registered before Jan. 31 will also receive a T-shirt at the event. Participants may register up to, and including, the day of the event.
In previous years, the charitable event has raised about $5,000 for the non-profit. PACA uses those funds to support its mission of promoting healthy life choices for the youth and families in Page County. With a majority of its funding coming from federal, state and foundation grants, PACA coordinates a number of projects from community gardens to anti-drug and substance abuse programs in local schools. The non-profit has numerous partnerships with various agencies in the county.
