SHENANDOAH, April 15 — Page County got off to a 5-0 start against Rappahannock on Monday, but then gave up four runs in the top of the second. The home-standing Panthers would have to hold off the visiting Panthers for five more innings in a battle of two sold-hitting teams.
Senior Jordan Foster lead Page County with a 3-for-3 effort at the plate, including a sixth-inning RBI. Foster also pitched four innings in relief, striking out five of the 16 batters he faced, while allowing only one earned run off two hits and two walks.
Page batted through the lineup in the first inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead fueled by six hits. The first run of the game came from an RBI-single from junior Tyler Monger. Senior Sean Cave then knocked in two runs off his only hit of the day, while senior Colby Cave and freshman Alex Good belted RBI-doubles.
Rapp battled right back with a little help from their hosts. The visitors posted four runs in the top of the second off only two hits. Page committed three errors and gave up three unearned runs in the inning. The only earned run came from an RBI-single from Junior Jared Loving.
Monger racked up two more RBI in the bottom of the second to give Page a 7-4 lead. Rapp again answered back as junior Tucker Atkins knocked in a run in the top of the third. The bats of both Panthers would then go silent until the bottom of the sixth when Page added two more runs. Foster accounted for both runs, as he belted an RBI-single and then scored later on aggressive base-running in a close play at the plate.
Rapp’s junior catcher William Vandrey knocked in the last run of the game in the top of the seventh, as Page went on to win the Bull Run District matchup, 9-6. The visiting Panthers were lead at the plate by Xavier Todd, the only player to get more than one hit. The freshman went 2-for-4, while the team recorded a total of six hits, five errors, and left five runners on base.
In addition to Page County’s nine runs and 11 hits, they stranded eight runners on base, while committing four errors in the field. Behind Foster’s perfect 3-for-3 effort, Colby Cave went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Monger went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Despite a tough beginning, Colby gets the win on the mound after three innings of work. Foster gets the save.
With the win, Page County moves to 8-2 overall and remains undefeated in the Bull Run District at 5-0. Next up, the Panthers travel to East Rockingham for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, April 16 that was rescheduled from March 22. East Rock handed Page one of its two losses of the season — both losses came to Class 3 schools.
With the loss, Rapp drops to 2-7 overall and 1-5 in the Bull Run. On Monday, Rapp was coming off a 9-3 win at Luray on April 5, just prior to spring break. Next up, the Panthers travel to Mt. View on Thursday, April 18.
