LURAY, July 6 — An annual event in Page County that was canceled last summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic is returning in August. The Page County Farmers Association summer picnic is set for Sunday, Aug. 1 at the Luray VFW.
“Summer is upon us. Everyone is busy with crops and vacations,” PCFA president Jim Gochenour stated in the Association’s July newsletter. “I know everyone is excited to be able to return to some essence of normalcy.”
The PCFA summer picnic will feature music by Virginia Rain beginning at 5 p.m. The picnic begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the annual business meeting at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees are asked to bring their favorite covered dish with meat, vegetable or dessert. Drinks, plates, cups and utensils will be provided.
For members attending who have not paid their dues for 2021, checks may be made payable to: “Page County Farmers Association”. Dues for 2021 are: Single $30; Joint $50; and Business $50. Membership dues for 2021 are due by Jan. 1 and may be mailed to: PCFA c/o Shirley Fleharty, Treasuer, 240 Forest Hills Drive, Luray, Va. 22835. Payments may also be made through Venmo or PayPal accounts (search Page County Farmers).
Bernie Miller will be filling the vacant position on the PCFA Board of Directors and finish the existing term of “Doc” Housden, which extends through December 2022.
At its last meeting, the Board of Directors decided to allow existing officers and board members to retain their seats for another year due to the absence of membership meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The current officers include: James K. Gochenour, president; Jerry Dinges, vice president; and Shirley Fleharty, secretary/trasurer. Board members include: Vance Bryant, Nathaniel Burke, Nelson Clark, Willie Elgin, Pen Grove, Bernie Miller, Clay Nevitt and Tyler Triggs. The Association plans to hold elections and approve the 2022 budget at a membership meeting in December.
The Page County Farmers Association selected Catherine “Kate” Shifflett as the 2021 scholarship recipient. The Luray High School graduate plans to attend Virginia Tech and major in Animal Poultry Science with a focus in Livestock Business/Production.
