MANASSAS, Feb. 24 — Page County High School sophomore Mackenzie Painter recently made history when she earned All-State honors with a fifth-place finish at the first-ever VHSL Girls Open State Wrestling Tournament on Feb. 24 at Unity Reed High School in Manassas.
Painter became the first female to ever earn All-State honors in wrestling at PCHS, while competing in the inaugural Girls State Open. The highly competitive event featured all six classifications in VHSL together broken down into 11 weight classes. Painter went 2-for-2 for the tournament, earning a fifth-place medal and All-State status at the 225-pound weight class.
“For Mackenzie Painter to come out, and get two big pins and to earn herself a 5th place medal, and earning all-state honors, in the first-ever VHSL Girls Open State Wrestling Tournament, was awesome to see,” PCHS head wrestling coach Greg Martin said.
“To coach these girls is such an honor.”
Also competing at the first-ever Girls State Open Wrestling Tournament were:
• PCHS junior Elizabeth Ramos just missed All-State recognition after finishing in seventh-place at 170 lbs. Ramos went 1-2 at the state tournament.
“I was so pleased with the way Elizabeth Ramos got after it, and got a big win,” Coach Martin said.
• PCHS sophomore Kaylee Campbell went 2-2 to finish in ninth-place at 112 lbs, among 31 competitors.
“I was proud of all three of my lady wrestlers,” Coach Greg Martin added. “Kaylee Campbell went 2-2 in a weight class that had 31 wrestlers in it, and she did amazing.”
