Phyllis Ann Sly

Age 90, Shenandoah, Va.

Phyllis Ann Sly, 90, of Shenandoah, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 25, 2023. Phyllis was born on September 30, 1933, in Rockingham County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Ervin Lee Dovel and Elzy Joan Lam Dovel. She lived all her life in or near Shenandoah, Virginia.

On December 23, 1952, she was united in marriage to Junior Lee Slye, who preceded her in death on August 23, 2017. They were married just a few months shy of 65 years.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Justin, Ernest and Robert Dovel; sisters, Hilda Plum, Hazel McAlister and Dorothy Wyant.

She was a member of the Church of Faith in Shenandoah. One of her proudest days was when she was baptized by Pastor Rose Hensley. She never missed a service when she was able and one of her greatest disappointments was having to stop attending church when her health declined.

Phyllis was an avid gardener and was extremely proud of the flowers she grew. She was a talented seamstress and loved to crochet and do crewel embroidery until arthritis made it to painful to continue. She was a fantastic cook.

Phyllis is survived by her son, Carroll James (Jim) Slye and friend, Tracy Stratton of Shenandoah; granddaughter, Kelsey Alexandra Slye of Charlottesville, Va and a very special pug named “Nugget”; brothers, Isaac Dovel and wife, Joanne, Olen Dovel and wife, Francis of Elkton; brothers-in-law, Joseph Sly of Shenandoah, Gene Sly of Harrisonburg; sister-in-law, Mary Sly of Harrisonburg; special niece and nephew, Sharon Morris of Shenandoah and Everett Eaton and wife, Nedra of Oklahoma; two nieces Cynthia McAlister and Carolyn Hammer of Shenandoah; also survived by Tracy Stratton’s sons, Logan Stratton of Elkton and Nash Stratton of Shenandoah; many, many nieces and nephews to numerous to name for fear of leaving someone out.  She is also survived by her church family.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, December 29, 2023, at the Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, with Pastor Rose Hensley officiating. Burial to follow at the Methodist Cemetery in Shenandoah.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.

A special thank you goes out to the Legacy Hospice Team who made Phyllis’s last hours painless and a great comfort to the family.
