October 25, 1990 — To say that the poultry industry is growing rapidly in Page County is a definite understatement.
Some 70,000 birds are killed daily at Rockingham Poultry Inc. at Alma, which is in the process of expansion. The plant is a subsidiary of Wampler, Longacre, Rockingham (WLR) Foods.
The expansion means that eventually, the plant will go to two production shifts, according to plant manager Tom Mallalieu. That means that some 135,000 chickens will be processed daily at the plant.
It also means that some 125 chicken houses will have to be built in Page County, or within a 40-mile radius of the WLR hatchery at Broadway.
