August 2, 1962 — The Elizabeth Furnace camping and picnic area in the George Washington National Forest in Powell’s Fort Valley has been closed because of an epidemic of rabid foxes.
John H. Hiner, forest ranger of Edinburg, said a team of federal government and state trappers is in the area for a systematic roundup of the animals.
Hiner said 11 foxes have been caught in a one-mile square area in the Fort Valley recreation area in the national forest.
At least three persons have been bitten in the park area and nearby Warren County. The animal in each instance was found to have been rabid.
