May 7, 1987 — Where else could a British Royal Air Force expedition blend U.S. military history with rich, natural beauty? And canoe a famous river? And hike an equally famous mountain range?
Thus, the Shenandoah Trek 1987 was conceived.
For two weeks, three officers and 10 airmen — all qualified long-distance marchers — blazed trails in the Shenandoah Valley.
The team began its 100- mile march along the Massanutten Mountain April 23 and concluded the trek in Winchester Sunday.
Stops included Port Republic, New Market, Luray and Front Royal.
