LURAY, Oct. 1 — Logan Richards is “our guy,” according to Page County High School head football coach James May.
“You know how team’s have that guy, well he’s our guy…the younger ones look up to him, he’s a leader for us on Friday nights and in practice,” Coach May said. “He’s a football guy, and he’s our guy.”
Richards has carried much of the offensive load for the Panthers this season, and success has been measured in “three yards and a cloud of dust.” While the Panthers are opening up the playbook a little more as we head to the halfway point of the season, at the start of the year, everything in the Panther offense revolved around Richards. Defenses began to key on the shifty running back, and the junior had to churn out some tough, hard-fought yardage in some lop-sided games.
In short, Richards plays the game with heart.
So, it was nice to see No. 3 get his due last Friday night when he averaged more than 20 yards a carry and found the end zone five times on the road against the Generals of Stonewall Jackson. Richards piled up 382 yards on 19 carries. In the second half alone, Richards rushed for more than 200 yards and scored three touchdowns. That performance fueled a 27-8 run by Page in the second half to put the game away after a competitive first half.
On the night, Richards had touchdown runs of 53, 60, 13, 61 and 34 yards. He had amassed 178 yards and two touchdowns by halftime.
And it couldn’t have happened to a better kid.
“It’s amazing,” Coach May said of Richards’ performance. “And he’s the first guy to say ‘I’ll block for you,’ he’s the first guy up there congratulating his offensive line.. We always need to have a big game out of Logan, but he had a really big game tonight, and we’re really proud of him.”
The Panthers put up a total of 492 yards of offense — 456 on the ground (382 by Richards) and 36 yards through the air.
Page County (2-3) takes a week off this Friday night, before traveling to Strasburg on Oct. 9 to take on the defending VHSL Class 2 state champions.
