
Age 88, Phoenix, Ariz.
Roy Allen Mathis, a veteran of the Vietnam War and resident of the Arizona State Veterans Home, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2025 at the age of 88 years old. Roy was surrounded by love and his friends and family when he passed.
Roy was born on May 28, 1936 in El Dorado, Arkansas to Roy H. Mathis and Hazel E. Evans. He never got to meet his father, but was raised by his mother and stepfather in Luray, Virginia and has a sister named Janet Atkins.
When Roy was of appropriate age he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he became a crew chief and was certified to work on several aircraft to include the F-100 Super Sabre, F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart, and F-4 Phantom. He served in Vietnam and had lived in Germany, South Dakota, Florida, Washington State, and Spain. He retired in 1974 after serving 21 years and 9 months.
Roy was most proud of his Air Force career, but is even more proud of his family. Roy is survived by his wife, Ingrid J. Mathis; his two daughters Patricia E. Shaw, Michelle A. Mathis; granddaughters Nicole C. Hurtado, Vanessa R. Corwin, Amanda B. Heiner, and Ariana C. Heiner. Roy also has five great-grandchildren named Ethan, Kaylie, Caroline, Riley, and Parker.
Roy was a fighter to the end and always expressed he lived a fulfilled and accomplished life! He went peacefully and comfortably with family right by his side.

The funeral will be held on January 24, 2025 at 9:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 2929 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd Phoenix, AZ 85024.
