Safeway to close

July 17, 1986 — Safeway Stores’ Richmond Division has announced that it is closing its supermarket in Luray. The announcement also said the Harrisonburg store will close at the same time, effective Aug. 16.

There is no chance that Safeway will reverse itself, as the A&P grocery chain did earlier this spring after announcing it would shut down 26 stores statewide, including the one in Luray, said Safeway spokeswoman Madge M. Bush of Richmond.

The primary factor behind the closings, which will affect 36 workers at the two stores, is “inability” to compete with other stores in Luray and Harrisonburg because of high labor costs.
