VHSL releases approved four-year district realignment plan

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Sept. 24 — During its September Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 23, the VHSL Executive Committee (EC) approved the next four-year alignment plan for 2027-28 through 2030-31.
The district realignment plan announced on Thursday calls for current Class 3 schools Skyline and Warren County high schools to drop down to Class 2 and join the Bull Run District. The move creates a 10-team district, with Luray, Page and Rappahannock County high schools being the only Class 1 members at the start of the 2027-28 school year.
The Panthers will go from being one of the smallest Class 2 schools, to being one of the largest Class 1 schools, just ahead of Luray. The district will still include its current members of Central, Clarke, Madison, Stonewall and Strasburg — all Class 2 schools.
The Shenandoah District will add Allegheny High School as a fifth Class 3 member, along with Rockbridge, Staunton, Waynesboro and Wilson Memorial. Class 2 Stuarts Draft and Fort Defiance remain, as well as Class 1 members Buffalo Gap and Riverheads.
Under the realignment plan, Class 2 will feature 51 schools, while Class 1 will have 55 schools.
Region 1B, where Luray and Page will compete, will include the following 15 teams:
- Altavista
- Appomattox Regional Governors School
- Brunswick
- Buffalo Gap
- William Campbell
- Carver College and Career Academy
- Cumberland
- Franklin
- Galileo Magnet
- Luray
- Page County
- Rappahannock County
- Riverheads
- Surry County
- Sussex Central
The majority of Class 1 schools are in the Northern Neck and Southwest regions of the state.
