Ortegas would limit occupancy to two guests and always be present

STANLEY, July 15 — During a joint session of the Stanley Council and the Stanley Planning Commission last week, a special use permit application submitted by Brian and Julie Ortega received unanimous approval of both boards to operate a short-term rental at 218 Cubbage Road.
“My wife and I have extensive experience managing short-term rental properties through platforms such as Airbnb and VRBO,” reads a letter from the Ortegas to the Council. They noted they held a 4.5-star rating at properties managed in Chicago. “We understand the importance of guest screening, communication, occupancy management, and maintaining respectful standards for visitors. Our goal is to provide a quiet, clean, and professionally managed lodging option that reflects positively on our community.”
The single, private guest room with one queen-sized bed offers a private bathroom and a private entrance. Occupancy is limited to two people at one time (possibly a third, if a couple has a small child), and the Ortegas told the council that they would always be present when hosting guests.
Neighboring landowners attended the July 15 joint public hearing in the Stanley fire hall prior to the July regular Council meeting. Most seemed okay with the short-term rental request due to its seemingly low impact. They talked over concerns with the property owner right from the podium. Some expressed concerns over the “type” of guests it may draw, but Julie Ortega assured them that safety and security measures were being taken, including the installation of security cameras with motion sensors and a fence with a lock around the pool. Julie also noted that her employment with the Page County Sheriff’s Office and the presence of a deputy cruiser at their residence might help deter “rowdy behavior.”
Some neighbors expressed a concern about noise — but not from visiting tourists…it appears Brian has a rooster that has made its presence known to many in the neighborhood during the early morning hours and beyond. He acknowledged that,” Yes, my wife has asked me to get rid of that thing, and I’m looking to do that.”
The SUP approval does not convey with the sale of the property.
