March 2, 1989 — Page County scored 19 of the final 21 points to beat Rockbridge and win the Virginia High School League Group A state volleyball championship Saturday in Suffolk.
After falling 15-7 in the first game and watching Rockbridge score four straight points to force an 11-all tie in the second, Page coach Alan Knight called a timeout to help his Panthers collect themselves. Page followed with four of the next five points for a 15-12 win in the second game, then totally dominated the Rebels in the third game for a 15-1 victory and the state championship.
Sophomore Melissa St. Clair and seniors Michele Hensley and Patty Breeden carried the Panther serving load during the decisive third game. St. Clair registered the first six points, Breeden the next five and Hensley the final glorious four.
