LURAY, Oct. 16 — Luray Middle School cross country runner Austin Strickler is making a name for himself this season. While PVN does not usually cover (or recognize) middle school athletes on a regular basis, we do note extraordinary performances, regardless of grade level.
Strickler, an eighth grader at LMS, has set new course records this season at Rappahannock, New Market and Luray — and on Thursday (Oct. 15) he won the Bull Run District middle school cross country championship. His time of 12:12 on Thursday set a new record at the New Market Battlefield course. Strickler also set the previous New Market course record earlier this season at 12:28.
Prior to this fall’s cross country season, the New Market course record had stood at 12:38 since 2011 — Strickler broke that 15-year record twice in less than two months.
The eighth grader also broke the LMS cross country course record with a time of 11:14. The previous record of 11:26 was set by former Bulldog Davey Johnson, who is now running for NCAA Division II Shippensburg University.
In a great display of sportsmanship, Strickler and a teammate even helped a runner from Peter Muhlenburg Middle School, who was having trouble, finish a race in Woodstock earlier this season.
In a few weeks, he’ll be competing in the state middle school cross country meet.
PVN would also like to give a shout out to Mary Nelson Kramer, another LMS runner, who won the girls division of the Bull Run cross country championships on Thursday with a time of 14:28.
