Red Cross reports ’emergency blood shortage’

LURAY — The American Red Cross (ARC) is facing an emergency blood shortage as it experiences the lowest number of people giving blood in the last 20 years.

Blood and platelet donations are needed on the next donation date, Wednesday, February 14 — Valentines Day — from noon to 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion in Luray, to ensure the performance of lifesaving medical procedures proceed without delay.

ARC reports that over the last 20 years, the number of people donating blood through the Red Cross has fallen by about 40 percent. When fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to blood donations — such as the nearly 7,000-unit shortfall in blood donations the Red Cross experienced between Christmas and New Year’s Day alone — can have huge dramatic consequences for those in need of emergency blood transfusion.

A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good health, may be eligible to donate blood.

Current blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using “RapidPass” online to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire.

The next American Red Cross Blood Drive will be Wednesday, February 14 from noon to 5:30 p.m. at the American Legion building on Zerkel Street in Luray.

Previous and current donors are urged to make an appointment to donate. New donors are specifically urged to call the Red Cross and make their donation appointment.

Persons interested in donating blood may go to Redcross.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to arrange a donation appointment.
