February 12, 1987 — Luray’s Town Council voted unanimously Monday not to lease the Woodland Park recreational facility this summer, citing excessive general liability insurance, maintenance and operational costs.
The decision was announced after the council resumed public session following a 30-minute executive session called to discuss the offer from the facility’s owner, Harry E. “Bud” Slye.
If the owner does not find a party willing to lease the complex, the facility may remain closed for the first time since 1981.
According to Mayor Ralph H. Dean and Town Manager Jerry Schiro, Luray has lost money in three of the last five summers the town has rented the complex.
