One swing of the bat can win the game
~ PVN staff report
LURAY, April 14 — While there are nine players on the field at all times, the biggest impacts in softball are typically dealt out by either really good pitchers or really good hitters. However, while one pitch usually doesn’t decide a game, one swing of the bat can — and having a solid power hitter means having a game-changer.
Page County High School junior Danica Turner is that type of impact player — and that’s why she’s our PVN “Athlete of the Week”. With one swing of the bat, Turner lifted the Panthers over the district-leading Rams of Strasburg, 1-0, on April 7. That one swing gave Page County its first district win, and Strasburg its first district loss.
There were only five hits in the game combined and one was a solo home run from Turner over the left field fence in the fourth inning. As a sophomore, Turner was one of only three Panthers to get a hit in their final 2025 game in the state quarterfinal against King William. She helped win multiple games last season, and now even higher expectations fall on her bat as a junior this spring.
Page County (2-0, 3-3) looks to make another run at the state tournament this season. Currently Page, Luray and Central are the only Bull Run teams remaining with a perfect mark in district play. The Panthers recently got wins over East Rock, 14-11, on Thursday, April 9, and Rappahannock, 16-5, on Friday, April 10.
Getting a win over Strasburg (3-1, 7-2) early was key for Page to remain near the top of the Bull Run. The two teams have become perennial powerhouse rivals on the softball field in recent years.
Next up, Page County will travel to Madison County to face the Mountaineers on Wednesday, April 15 and then host the Generals of Stonewall Jackson on Friday, April 17.
