Vandals steal flag

April 2, 1987 — Ulysses P. Wade, a past commander of Luray VFW Post 621, called it “a desecration.” Yvonne Johnson of the Luray Inn said it was “a horrible thing to happen.” “Rotten ain’t the word for it,” said acting Luray Police Chief Albert Judd.

Sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday, vandals stole the 18-foot by 12-foot American flag at the Luray Inn. The banner was stepped on, soiled, and discarded in a Luray woman’s yard.

The woman, who is not a suspect in the case, notified the Page County Sheriff ’s Department, and the banner was returned to the inn, Judd said.

The huge flag had been hoisted March 24 during a dedication ceremony.
