LURAY, Oct. 9 — Luray High School volleyball coach Susan Henry-Wilson has nurtured a talented junior class for several years. That group will once again provide some postseason intrigue for Bulldog fans this fall, as Luray is currently ranked No. 4 in Region 1B. Among that talented group is the high-flying Zoe Vaughn.
Vaughn has proven to be a threat at the net. She recorded 10 kills against Strasburg earlier this week. However, it wasn’t just her powerful spikes that were impressive. Vaughn laid out for digs, went up boldly for blocks, and she’s a pretty good server too, recording an ace against the Rams. This junior is one of the more athletic and versatile players in the area.
After picking up a district win against Strasburg on Tuesday, Luray fell to undefeated Madison on Thursday to move back to .500 at 8-8. However, there’s something to be said for a “good loss.”
Prior to Thursday night’s matchup, the Mountaineers had only lost four sets through 15 matches, winning 11 matches 3-0. Madison had not given up two sets in a single match all season — until they met the Bulldogs. Luray lost 2-3 on Thursday, but it was the most competitive match Madison had played all season — and the Mountaineers are contenders for the VHSL Class 2 state title.
The Bulldogs have been streaky this season — 1L, 2W, 1L, 2W, 3L, 3W, 2L, 1W, 1L. Yet, they have shown they can play with the toughest competition in the area, which bodes well for their chances in Region 1B and VHSL Class 1 state tournament.
