Charles "Leon" Jenkins

Age 101, Luray, Va.

Charles “Leon” Jenkins, 101, of Luray, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Page Memorial Hospital.

He was born on October 6, 1922, in Page County and was a son of the late Lee Jenkins and Rosie Gochenour Jenkins.

He attended Luray High School and in 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, where he completed his education. He had extensive training in military defense and with the medical detachment unit and was discharged in 1946 as Sergeant First Class. Mr. Jenkins then returned home and worked for and retired from Wrangler, with over 50 years of service.

Mr. Jenkins was the oldest member of the Luray Church of the Brethren, where he served as secretary and an usher for over 50 years. He was a beloved church member and occasionally played favorite hymns on his guitar as part of the worship service.

Mr. Jenkins was an avid gardener, taking pride in raising vegetables for his family and friends, as well as maintaining an immaculate lawn.

On October 6, 1962, he married Hattie “Fern” Fox Miller, who died in 2008. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joan Miller Wilson, and son-in-law Eddie Wayne Wilson of Luray; four brothers, Clyde Jenkins, Archie Jenkins, Donald Jenkins and Bobby Jenkins; and three sisters, Bertha Gordon, Elaine Jenkins and Belle Weakley.

He is survived by two grandchildren, Christi Wilson and husband Randy Ellis of Powhatan, and Jason Wilson and wife Sarah of Blacksburg; two great-grandchildren, Anna Brown and husband Dylan Crapps of Richmond, and Austin Ellis of Phoenix, AZ; and one great-great-grandchild, Logan Wilson Crapps of Richmond.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at the Luray Church of the Brethren by Pastor Mary Cline Detrick. Lunch will be provided after the service in the church social hall.
