October 1, 1987 — Scotty beamed up quite a few fans in Luray this week. Actor James Doohan, the broguish engineer on television’s long-running “Star Trek” series and in the four movies it spawned, signed autographs and engaged in friendly chatter with a crowd at the Luray Inn and Conference Center Monday night.

It was an unscheduled appearance since Doohan was spending the night of a spontaneous vacation trip after personal appearances in Greensboro, N.C., and Baltimore.

“I thought I’d try a trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains,” he said, declaring the ride across the Skyline Drive “gorgeous.”

The actor has lived in Los Angeles for the past 26 years, pursuing his acting career and a busy round of personal appearances as the “Star Trek” character who has been immortalized with the phrase, “Beam me up, Scotty.”
