Christmas time

December 25, 1891 — Again Christmas time draweth nigh and we are thinking about what it will be best to give to this or that friend, for we really know of nothing they need. Hence the perplexing question is “What shall we give?”

That we often do make grievous mistakes in bestowing gifts all will admit, and possibly we may repeat the error this Christmas, but we can endeavor to avoid it if possible, and give the matter more thought for the next year.

The custom of giving gifts to friends is a happy one, and should be encouraged to a certain extent. Many persons value a gift only for its costliness and not for the sake of the giver. Others give only to outdo someone else, or repay a seeming debt.

When we plan to get costly gifts for our friends, let us remember the friendless and unfortunate, of whom Christ said: “Inasmuch as ye have done it to the lest of these, ye have done it unto me.”

And the best gift is love to all mankind.
